A Message to prospective employees-
In 1990, the Helix staff began thinking of innovative ways to better prepare our student body for the rapidly evolving work environment that they would face in the 21st century. We began examining school data, looking at reform documents and appraising our students in terms of their readiness for the world of work. In this process we began to realize that what leading authorities in education have been saying was true; the assembly line form of schooling no longer met the needs of students entering the world in the 21st century. The 1950’s school system was obsolete.
During the past ten years, the staff adopted a guiding vision that commits us to producing highly skilled, productive citizens who can achieve and demonstrate learning at high levels. We have developed exit standards in coordination with our students and community. We have increased graduation requirements. Graduates prove through authentic tasks that they have met these standards.
As we worked in this area, we came to the conclusion that continued improvements required the creation of a Charter School. In February 1995, with strong support from faculty, parents, students and the community, Helix Charter was created. This makes Helix the only comprehensive Charter High School in San Diego County.
It is our intent to offer our students a unique learning opportunity. They will be able to benefit from a longer, more flexible school day, with smaller class size, and increased opportunities to learn on and off campus. Our Charter will offer parents and community members ongoing significant opportunities to become more directly involved in the education of their children--our future work force.
We continue to develop professionally, with the teachers and staff at Helix High School focusing on integrating curriculum, expanding leadership roles, and sharing decision-making. The Charter will make it possible for Helix High School to assume a greater autonomy of its budgets and expenditures, increasing its stewardship of its human and material resources.
